[Growlbook] Alpha release (current build)
by Austin on Aug.20, 2009, under Growlbook
Why am I releasing an alpha release? Because it supports auto-updating and includes support for messages – two options that I want to have open to me tomorrow when I get to work heh.
Enjoy.

First of all, thanks for taking the time to create this app! Great job so far.
I just installed the 1.1.1.0 alpha and I am seeing something strange. I’m getting a FormRequestPermission window popping up when I sign in. At first, it says “You must be logged in to Facebook to use this feature.” If I click the Okay button, the FormRequestPermission stays up and says Success. It cannot be dismissed.
While that form is up, I am getting Facebook notifications, though. So it’s definitely connecting.

Good to know… I implemented permission requesting; however, it should be using your current session that is created by logging in via Growlbook… Can you send a screenshot of the “must be logged in” page to me? Austin@austindhanson.com.
Thanks

Hmm. Quick fix for now. Open up internet explorer, login with “Remember me” checked, then open Growlbook.
Thanks for letting me know about this, I would have missed it.

Three questions:
1) What is growlbook?
2) Did you make it?
3) When does the Mac version come out?

1. Growlbook provides you with notifications (like messenger popups when someone signs on, etc) for Facebook notifications, messages, alerts, etc. It uses Growl For Windows to ship out the notifications to the user.
2. Yep, sole developer; however, Growl For Windows is the notifier system and is far more involved than my application for it. Mad props to the developers of it.
3. Hmm… I’ll look into porting it over to mono. No promises though.

FYI, the setup program does not seem to work on Windows Vista. It gives an Install Error:
You do not have permission to write to C:/Program Files.
I am looking forward to using this app, but I have tried every version released so far, and I haven’t been able to get it to work yet. Thanks for keeping up with the development, and I hope to get some facebook notifications soon!

Hmm. I’ll throw a custom installer option in so you can select where to install it once I get home.
Sorry about that.

FYI, all of my other programs are in the Program Files directory, but Vista has protection on it by default. Most other installers pop-up a UAC prompt to allow or cancel the installation, but this one just gave an error instead. I’m not sure if the custom installer option would solve this problem.
Also, with the current 1.1 Beta, I usually get an Internet Connection error upon login: “There was no valid internet connection.” However, I have several other programs (web browser, email, etc.) accessing the internet without a problem.

You Rule!!! Thank you!

Alan, I threw up a new installer, give that one a whirl. I also uploaded a zipped package as well if it fails (but I don’t think it will).

The new installer works great, thanks. After I login now, I get a large popup window that says:
You must be logged in to Facebook to use this feature.
When I click okay, it changes to a blank white window that says “Success.” I am unable to dismiss or hide this window, unless I exit out of Growlbook completely.
After a while, the systray icon will change to show a number indicating how many messages I have in my inbox, however I still do not seem to get any notifications in Growl.

Regarding the issues mentions above i did the fix you suggested by opening internet explorer. This did indeed work and you then give it permission on Facebook. now the next time you open it you get a diff error.
This time it locks up on “This application cannot ask you for permission read_mailbox

Cool! I just got my first notification this morning. It was a follow-up comment on a post that I had commented on earlier. So, Growlbook is working for me now. I had expected to get a lot more alerts though, since I have enabled it for all notifications. Does it support sending notifications for new items in the “News Feed”, i.e. friends’ status updates and other new posts, similar to what the Facebook Toolbar does in Firefox? I thought that’s what the included support for notifications of “New stream posts” meant, but I do not seem to be getting these.
Thanks!

Austin, I’ve sent two screenshots. I figured out the work-around, too. Thanks!

Matt, could you send me a screenshot of that? Is it a Facebook page or an error?

The app keeps crashing after install. I am running Windows XP.
August 24th, 2009 on 4:35 pm
Tommy, can you email me the crashlog.txt file in the program folder? Also, do you know if you have the latest release of the 3.5 .Net Framework?

I am having the same problem as Matt. The window pops up with read_mailbox warning.
No notifications are being pushed at all.
Grrr
